TWENTY GUNAS - QUALITIES OF MATTER

TWENTY GUNAS or qualities are recognized by ayurveda and are related to the five elements, Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether or space. Every quality has an equal and opposite quality so there are ten pairs. All physical things have qualities and we will nowsee how the elements determine the physical characteristics.



Heaviness  (Guru) gives weight density and bulk. It is earth & water elements.and Lightness(Laghu) is a reduction in molecular weight and less density. It is the quality of ether, air and fire.



Hot (Ushana)is the quality responsible for increase in temperature and promotes heat.It is the fire element. Cold (Hima)is the quality of reduction in temperature. It Creates cold, contraction andinertia. It is water & air elements.



Sharpness  (Teekshana) is the quality for fast, quick action and penetration. It is the fire element. Dullness (Manda)Is the property of delayed response which creates sluggishness, slowness and dullness.  It is the water and earth elements.

 


Unctuousness (oily) (Snigdha) Is the quality of oilinessand creates a smooth, moist and oily nature, promoting lubrication. It is the water element. Dryness (Rooksha) Is the property resulting in the absorption of moisture and Increases dryness and absorption, It is air and space elements.

 


Hardness (Kadinam) gives rise to the feeling of hardness and rigidity. It isthe earth element. Softness (Mrudu) brings about softness and is the water element.

 


Roughness (Kharam)Is the quality responsible for roughnness and is theair & fire element.



Smooth (Slakshna) is the property responsible for a smooth texture and is the water and ether elements.

 


Solid (Sandra) Is the quality which provides a solid nature andpromotes density.It isthe earth element. Liquidity (Dravam) is the quality responsible for fluidity topromote cohesiveness. It contains the water element.

 


Stable or Static (Sthiram) brings about immobility and firmness, providing stability and support.



It is earth element. Unstable (Chalam promotes motion and contains the water element.

 


Bulkiness (Sthulam) is the quality which brings about bulk  and containsthe earth element. Subtle or microscopic (Susukshma) Is the quality of a substance which can penetrate microscopically. It contains fire, air, space element.


 

Clearness (Vishadam) provides transparency or a clear nature, it contains air, fire, earth and space elements. Turbidity meaning cloudy(Pichilam)  is the quality responsible for stickiness, sliminess and a smooth coating. It contains the water element.
