TANTRA IN MANAGEMENT

History has revealed the collapse of Imperialism, Communism and now Capitalism. These ‘isms’ are Western schools of thought thrust upon the world being derived from a mindset of hierarchy which is financially evaluated for success, growth and power. It is meant purely for commercial and materialistic interests and inevitably has divided the world into ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’. The gap between these classes continues to increase as the commercial world grows. Today’s tycoon becomes a pauper of tomorrow and vice-versa.

Case studies of Harvard and Kellogg do not help the Multi-National Companies to hold on to their peaks, they are all on a very slippery slope. By 2020, China is predicted to take over the USA and India to take over Europe as the new superpowers. Lehman Brothers, AIG and GM Motors have initiated this trend.

We wonder how and why this swing from West to East has taken place so rapidly. Eastern business schools of thought belong to the old Shasthras and Nidhis such as Kautaliya’s and Artha Shastra, Vidura Nidi, Shukra Nidhi and Panchasheel, which are based on Tantras, Vedas and Upanishads which originated in India and has its roots in TANTRA. The essence of these philosophies have spread to all Eastern and Asian countries including China, Japan through Buddhism.

Tantra means technique and dates back over 5000 years, perhaps the oldest of the scriptures. Vijyana Bhairava Tantra deals with techniques to go beyond consciousness. All unconquered and unexploited treasures are stored in our unconscious mind. According to J. Krishnamurthi and Osho, Western schools of thought fail to tap into this inner treasure and only address the conscious mind. IQ and EQ (Emotional Intelligence) are sufficient to manage world affairs, but to lead them, Tantra says we require SQ (Spiritual Intelligence) which derives from Parasakthi (Eternal Energy or Cosmic Energy).

When the mind operates at the IQ and SQ level it cannot delve into the realms of Vijyanamaya Kosha (Knowledge sheath). Thus a shift in following Western management concepts to Vedic thought is requires to integrate the world into a global village.

Western Management Concepts vs Vedic Concepts

 (W) Managing vs                          (V) Leading

(W) Financial Success vs             (V) Service (Nishkama)

(W) Growth vs                               (V) Development

(W) “I” centred vs                          (V) “We” centred

(W) Pride: Power: Masculinity: vs (V) Humility: Self-control: Femininity:

(W) Control vs                               (V) Trust

(W) Hierarchy vs                           (V) Fluid Organization

(W) Local vs                                  (V) Global Village

(W) Character vs                           (V) Consciousness

Osho rightly says “My whole effort is to give you consciousness not character. Character is needed by those who don’t have consciousness. If you have eyes, you don’t need a walking stick to find your way.  If you can see you don’t ask others “Where is the door?” Character is needed because people are unconscious  i.e. unaware.

The present day MBA degree is like a stick to the blind, it must be given eyes through the benefit of TANTRA. It transforms from darkness to light, from unconsciousness to consciousness. Taoism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Zen are derivations of TANTRA. TANTRA should be made the major concept of modern management so that integration not division of the world can occur.

Perhaps TANTRA can save the world from all its ‘isms’ and global melt down!  Let us introduce J. Krishnamurti and Osho to the MBA curriculum henceforth and see the change.

ATAY Questionaire on the spirituality page Determining the Qualities of the Mind Sattva Rajas Tamas

In order to reach a higher state of awareness, the mind must have a predominantly sattvic quality, that is purity of body and mind. Unlike prakriti (true nature) of body and mind the gunas can be changed through diet and lifestyle. By gaining control of rajas, the tendency towards action, tamas the tendency towards inertia the mind will become more sattvic.
